I am an External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute.
I am the Director of the Vermont Complex Systems Center at UVM (VCSC).
In my research and teaching, I focus on system-level, big data problems of all kinds, often networked, sociotechnical ones. I have general interests in stories/narratives, complexification, contagion, and robustness, and a long term goal to understand a Theory of Anything.
My major initial funding was an NSF CAREER award to study sociotechnical phenomena (2009–2015). Overall, my work has also been supported by the NSF, the NIH, the McDonnell Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, NASA, the MITRE Corporation, Computer Associates, Mass Mutual, and Google.
