Episode 02: Introduction to natural branching networks

Summary:

We start to investigate branching networks with some example simulations (salvaged from a VHS cassette). We lay out the many scaling laws of river networks. We define stream ordering in a couple of ways, and think about how branching networks are partitioned using stream ordering. We describe the laws of Horton, Strahler, and Tokunaga which collectively detail the mixed hierarchical, self-similar nature of real branching networks. And we begin to connect Horton's law and Tokunaga's law, showing that only two parameters of six are independent.
