Episode 12: The robust-yet-fragileness of real complex systems

Summary:

We explore the design of highly hypothetical forests showing how Highly Optimized Tolerance (HOT) theory can explain the appearance of power-law size distributions of bad things happening to generally robust systems. A toy model of forest fires shows us the possible system narrative. We compare with Self-Organized Criticality (SOC) and finish things up with a refreshing compress of COLD Theorapy.
