Episode 09g: Many sources, many sinks: The size-density law (at speed)

Summary:

Optimal locations for hospitals and coffee shops. Originally, a mainstay in CocoNuTs, this set of slides has been stolen by PoCS in recent years. We still go through them, rampangingly, because the story is so important and it's a capstone for the first major section in CocoNuTs on supply networks. Nutshell: We examine the problem of locating many sources in service of many sinks distributed throughout a region. We start with the prosocial version: Given the natural uneveneness of population density, how do we locate facilities so as to minimize the average distance between an individual and their nearest facility? The problem is NP complete but can be handled approximately in theory and in simulation, and we retrace the paths of travellers from diverse disciplines.
