Episode 14: HOT versus SOC, then how to locate hospitals
Summary:
We finish exploring the HOT model both theoretically and simulationingly (with the help of PoCS team member provided videos). We compare HOT to Self-Organized Criticality (SOC). Long-grained rice appears. We reduce the debate temperature with the COLD model. We end with a start on facility placement for unevenly distributed populations (as they always are). Where to place hospitals and coffee shops? Somehow, it's all connected. We examine the problem of locating many sources in service of many sinks distributed throughout a region. We first treat the prosocial version: Give the natural uneveneness of population density, how do we locate facilities so as to minimize the average distance between an individual and the facility nearest to them? The problem is NP complete but can be handled approximately in theory and in simulation, and we retrace the paths of travellers from diverse disciplines.
