Episode 22: Other ways for finding the shape of things

Summary:

More fun with structure detection. We explore electronic and random walk betweenness and see that the specific kind of betweenness used in hierarchical division methods doesn't affect the outcome much. We then take a tour of major methods including good old shuffling for modules, secondary eigenvalue patterns, hierarchical random network models with missing link detetion built-in, overlapping communities with cliques, link-based community detection, and move beyond hierarchies with general structure detection.

Asides:

Game of Thrones character network, a failure to show the Bechdel test properly, Dolphins and Les Miserables, ear rubbing, the historical thesaurus, and introducing Codex the Fox.

Scribblings:

Back of the envelope notes made during class.
