Episode 18e (9:26):
Algebraic and geometric multiplicity for eigenthings

Summary:

We contend with the disappointing truth that some matrices do not have a full complement of eigenvectors. Problems arise when eigenvalues are repeated in a matrix's characteristic equation. The number of times an eigenvalue repeats is its algebraic multiplicity and the dimension of the associated eigenspace is its geometric multiplicity.
